BRISTOL ROVERS ~ 1957-58

Geoff BRADFORD scores the winner in a very exciting game at Ashton Gate which ended 4-3. "Bradford's goal was off-side" claimed 30,000 of the 39,126 crowd.

Rovers' last game in 1957 was a visit to Upton Park, sorry to report.... a 6-1 defeat.

Rovers lost at Doncaster Rovers (2-3 on Nov 23 '57) goals from Hooper and Petherbridge. This started a bad spell of one win in 10 games, which included a 6-1 defeat at WEST HAM, a 7-0 drubbing at GRIMSBY and 6-4 at SWANSEA TOWN on Christmas Day.

Another average season for the Rovers, mid table with 42 points from 42 games, promoted from division 2 were West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers with Notts County and Doncaster Rovers dropping down to league 3.

Top goal scorers Geoff BRADFORD (20), Dai WARD (14) and Peter HOOPER (14)

The FACUP was more successful with a win over BURNLEY after drawing at Eastville 2-2 Rovers won the replay 3-2, Burnley were to finish 6th in division 1, so a great achievement.


Round 5 saw Rovers visit Ashton Gate and come away with a great 4-3 victory with 39,126 watching.

Another unusual Christmas, games were played Christmas Day and the return fixture on Boxing Day, Rovers lost 6-4 in Swansea, then winning at Eastville 3-0 with a crowd of nearly 23,000.
